About

The original Gronnestad Family Farm is on a small island called Bokn, off the west coast of Norway. Kaare Gronnestad, the third eldest son of Rasmus Gronnestad was brought up on this, his family farm until the age of 15; when it was then time to leave home to pursue a carpentry apprenticeship.

In 1953, at the age of 19 Kaare left his home country with his best friend and $60. Their the destination was the far side of the world, the west coast of Canada, his dreams were to one day own a guitar and a cowboy hat. Shortly after this cross Atlantic and cross country journey he met his wife to be Vida in the city of Cranbrook. She also lived on a small farm where her father was a champion pigeon racer.

Kaare and Vida were married in 1963, after which time they moved to Victoria and raised 5 children.

In 2003 Kaare and Vida retired from the big city life of construction and school teaching and went back to their farming roots purchasing 19 acres of hay field in North Cowichan just outside the city of Duncan. They built themselves a comfortable home with a large garden and chicken coop. In 2021 their youngest son Kim moved to the property with a small microgreens business selling to restaurants in the Victoria area. Now together they are continuing traditional pasture-raised sheep farming the way it’s been done for generations, with the utmost care to the animals thus the genesis of “Greens, Eggs, and Lamb”.
